Overview of Environmental Crimes in Latin America Over the Last Five Years: A Systematic Review

This systematic review had as general objective to analyze the panorama of environmental crimes in Latin America over the last five years. Methodologically, a qualitative approach and the PRISMA strategy were employed to select a total of twenty-one articles from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, which allowed the analysis of the aforementioned topic. The results revealed a critical overview in Latin America, being the main forms, illegal logging, illegal mining, and wildlife trafficking. Current trends evidence regulatory setbacks, increased violence against environmental defenders, and fragmented institutional responses. The associated socioeconomic factors include poverty and the lack of economic alternatives in vulnerable communities. It is concluded that there is a systematic gap between regulatory frameworks and their effective compliance, which configures a scenario of impunity that disproportionately affects vulnerable communities and calls for profound transformations to address the structural factors of power, corruption, and social inequality.
