Scope

Desafíos is an open-access scientific publication edited by the Universidad de Huánuco (Peru), aimed at disseminating knowledge in the field of social sciences and humanities, with a particular focus on education studies. Its purpose is to provide a rigorous academic space for the publication of original and unpublished research that promotes analysis, reflection, and the exchange of ideas on the contemporary challenges faced by societies in the educational sphere.

Coverage

Desafíos encompasses works developed from theoretical, empirical, or methodological perspectives related to topics such as pedagogy, education policy, innovation in teaching, institutional management, teacher training, interculturality, social and cultural processes, as well as the use of technologies in educational contexts. The journal accepts contributions in Spanish and English (starting in 2025), and adheres to a double-blind peer review process to ensure editorial quality, transparency, and impartiality.

Target audience

Desafíos is intended for researchers, university professors, undergraduate and postgraduate students, professionals in the educational field, policymakers, as well as specialists and academics interested in the field of education. The journal seeks to strengthen the link between scientific production and its application in real contexts, fostering critical thinking, academic debate, and a commitment to the educational and social development of communities.

Periodicity

Desafíos is a biannual journal, with two issues per year: the first covering the January–June period, and the second covering July–December. Accepted articles are published in the first month of each period, once the editorial and peer review process has been completed.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

Desafíos does not charge any fees for the processing, review, or publication of articles. Submission, evaluation, and publication of manuscripts are completely free of charge for authors, in line with its open-access policy and its commitment to the democratization of scientific knowledge.

Peer review process

Desafíos evaluates all manuscripts through a double-blind peer review system, ensuring the anonymity of both authors and reviewers. This process aims to guarantee the quality, originality, and rigor of the published works.

Once the manuscript is received, it undergoes a preliminary editorial review to verify that it meets the basic criteria of originality, thematic relevance, formal structure, and adherence to the journal’s editorial guidelines. If approved at this stage, the manuscript is sent to two external reviewers who are specialists in the article’s subject matter and who will issue their evaluations independently.

Reviewers are selected based on their academic expertise, scientific output, and affiliation with prestigious institutions, both national and international. Their responsibility is to assess the quality of the article in terms of conceptual soundness, currency of theoretical references, methodological coherence, and relevance of the results.

The possible outcomes are: accepted without changes, accepted with revisions, or rejected. In case of disagreement between the reviewers, the manuscript will be sent to a third reviewer, whose decision will be final. If both reviewers issue a conditional acceptance, the revised article will be sent back to one of them to determine whether it is suitable for publication. Articles that receive two negative evaluations will be automatically rejected.

The editorial team guarantees that all decisions will be based on well-supported evaluations. The estimated time for issuing the final decision will not exceed 45 calendar days from the receipt of the manuscript. Once the decision is received, the author will have 15 calendar days to submit the revised version. If further revisions are required, the author will have up to 10 days to respond.

Accepted articles will go through a final stage of scientific editing, which includes copyediting, metadata verification, and galley proofs. The final version will be sent to the author for approval within 5 calendar days. The formal acceptance of the article will be communicated only by the Editorial Committee through the institutional email editorial@udh.edu.pe.

Support

Desafíos has the institutional support of the University Press of the Universidad de Huánuco, which provides technical and editorial assistance to ensure the quality and continuity of the publication.

Funding

The publication of Desafíos is funded by the Universidad de Huánuco through the Vice-Rectorate for Research.

History

Desafíos was founded in 2013 as a scientific print journal with a multidisciplinary focus aimed at academic dissemination across various fields of knowledge. In its early stages, the journal welcomed contributions in areas such as philosophy, literature, aesthetics, anthropology, history, sociology, psychology, theology, communication, among other disciplines within the social sciences and humanities.

Since 2019, the journal has transitioned to an electronic publishing model using the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, offering articles in PDF, HTML, and XML formats. This transition has enabled greater visibility, accessibility, and indexing in academic databases.

Starting in 2025, Desafíos adopts an exclusive thematic focus on the field of education, prioritizing theoretical, empirical, and methodological research that contributes to the advancement of educational knowledge from interdisciplinary perspectives. This thematic redefinition reflects the journal’s commitment to specialization, scientific quality, and alignment with the current needs of the academic environment.
