Resumen

The evaluation of bird diversity in urban green spaces is fundamental for comprehed the ecological status of ecosystems and their capacity to sustain biological communities. The objective of this study was to compare the diversity, composition, and richness of birds in the campuses of the Universidad de Huánuco (UDH) and the Universidad Nacional Hermilio Valdizán (UNHEVAL), located in the city of Huánuco, Peru. The study had a descriptive and comparative approach through fieldwork conducted directly on both campuses. Species records were obtained through visual and auditory observation, photographic support, and the use of specialized applications (Merlin Bird ID and eBird). Data were analyzed through the Shannon–Wiener and Simpson diversity indices, the Chao1 richness estimator, and Pielou’s evenness index. Sixteen bird species were recorded at UDH and six at UNHEVAL. The results evidenced higher diversity and evenness values at UDH, as well as greater potential richness according to Chao1, whereas UNHEVAL exhibited greater dominance by a few species. It was concluded that significant differences exist in the structure of bird communities between both campuses, mainly associated with vegetation cover and the level of human disturbance, highlighting the importance of university campuses as refuges for urban biodiversity.
