Potential for success and managerial competencies in students from two private universities in Lima

Objective.To determine the levels of potential for success and managerial competencies presented by students of the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Human Resources of two private universities in Lima.Methods.The research was descriptive, comparative and correlational.The study population consisted of 210 students from the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Human Resources of two universities in Metropolitan Limawho are studying in the last two cycles of their careers, of both sexes and who are working in a company. The type of sampling was non-probabilistic.The success potential scale of Sanchez (2005), modified by Carbonel and Diaz (2012) and the HJS administrative competencies self-assessment inventory (Hellriegel, Jackson and Slocum, 2011) were applied to a sample of 140 students. Results.On the success potential scale, 17.1 % of the sample showed a poor level; 27.9 % showed a low level; 12.9 % showed a moderate or average level; 29.3 % showed a high level; and only 12.9 % showed an optimal level of success potential for the job.On the managerial competencies scale, 6.4 % showed a poor level of managerial competencies, 13.6 % showeda low level of managerial competencies; 35 % showed an average level of managerial competencies; 27.1 % reached a high level of managerial competencies, and 17.9 % showedan excellent level. Conclusions.No significant differences werefound in the general scale of potential for success by university of origin, although there were significant differences by sex and employment status. No significant differences were found in the general scale of managerial competencies by university of origin or by sex, but they were highly significant by employment status.
